Gutiérrez Nájera, Manuel

Gutiérrez Nájera, Manuel (mänwel' gOOtyār'rās nä'hārä) [key], 185995, Mexican poet and journalist. One of the precursors of modernismo, he founded the literary periodical Revista Azul. His elegant poetry, edited after his death, is delicately musical and wistful; it reflects the influence of Bécquer and of the French symbolists and shows the transition from romanticism to modernism. He also wrote exquisite, often humorous prose, notably in Cuentos frágiles [gossamer stories] (1883) and Cuentos de color de humo [smoke-colored stories] (1898).
