Jocelin de Brakelond

Jocelin de Brakelond (jos'lin du brāk'lond) [key], fl. 1200, English chronicler, a monk of Bury St. Edmunds. His chronicle of St. Edmund's Abbey, covering the years 11731202, is written in a simple, vigorous style and is remarkable for its vivid pictures of monastic life and characters, particularly of the abbot Samson. Carlyle used it as the basis for the second part of his Past and Present.
