Murray, Sir James Augustus Henry

Murray, Sir James Augustus Henry, 18371915, English lexicographer. In 1879 he assumed the editorship of the New English Dictionary (the Oxford English Dictionary), which was his life's work (see dictionary). Murray was a guiding force in this compilation, a triumph of modern scholarship, and its general plan and much of the work on details are to be credited to him.
