Howard Dean, former governor of Vermont, emerged as a the frontrunner in the crowded field of Democratic presidential hopefuls. In the third quarter of 2003, he raised $14.8 million, more than each of his rivals. Much of Dean's take came from donations through the Internet. Many of Dean's supporters have used the website Meetup.com to organize rallies and letter-writing campaigns.
