Gray Davis, California politician, was ousted as governor in October, when he lost a recall election eleven months after he was reelected. About 54% of voters approved the recall. Austrian-born body builder Arnold Schwarzenegger won the election that replaced him. Davis faced mounting troubles over the summer as the state's deficit ballooned to a record-setting $38 billion, his approval ratings plummeted, and credit-rating agencies lowered the state's credit rating.
