cynical and subjective writer known for his drug-fueled yet wickedly perceptive coverage of the American political scene. In Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail '72, he recounted his experiences covering the 1972 presidential race between George McGovern and Richard Nixon. Thompson was the most famous practitioner of the freewheeling, flamboyant style called “gonzo journalism.” He committed suicide.
