Hans Bethe

Age: 98

physicist who was a leader in the development of the atom bomb for the U.S. government's Manhattan Project. During the 1980s and 1990s, Bethe championed the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. He won a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1967 for his discovery of how the stars and the Sun continue to burn. He taught at Cornell University for more than 70 years.
