King Gyanendra,

leader of Nepal, capitulated to an alliance of seven opposition parties in April, after nearly three weeks of deadly pro-democracy demonstrations. The protesters demanded that the king restore Parliament and call for a referendum to redraft the Constitution. He initially balked at their demands, and then said he would hand over executive power to a prime minister. The opposition rejected his offer, and days later he agreed to reinstate Parliament.
