Originally a stand-up comic, he later became a TV writer ( Your Show of Shows) and a TV series creator (Get Smart) before releasing his first feature film, The Producers, in 1967. He is probably best known for his wacky send-ups of various film genres, including Blazing Saddles (1974), Young Frankenstein (1974), History of the World — Part 1 (1981), and Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993). He has been married to the actress Anne Bancroft since 1964.
