Original members Adam Jones, Maynard James Keenan, Danny Carey, and Paul D'Amour met in Los Angeles and formed Tool in 1990. Their albums include Opiate (1992), Undertow (1993), and Aenima (1996). D'Amour was replaced by Justin Chancellor in 1995.

Jones moved to Los Angeles after attending art school in the midwest; he learned stop-motion camera techniques and special effects, working on a number of movies including Jurassic Park (1993). He put this knowledge to good use when working on Tool's music videos, such as Sober (1993).
