led Indiana to NCAA title as sophomore and Final 4 MOP in 1981; consensus All-America guard in '81; led Detroit to 2 NBA titles (1989, 1990); NBA Finals MVP in 1990; 3-time All-NBA 1st team (1984-86); retired in 1994 at age 33 after tearing right Achilles tendon; following a failed tenure as owner of the CBA, he coached NBA's Indiana Pacers from 2000-03; elected to Hall of Fame in 2000; named New York Knicks president of basketball operations in Dec. 2003.
