Beverly Sills (Belle Silverman) operatic soprano Born: 5/25/1929 Birthplace: Brooklyn, New York
Animated coloratura widely regarded as America's greatest soprano. She has appeared as the heroine in more than 50 operas, including Handel's Julius Caesar, Offenbach's Tales of Hoffman and Donizetti's Anna Bolena. She served as director of the New York City Opera (1979–89) and since 1994 has been chairwoman of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
