First known for his television work in the '60s and early '70s, by the late '70s he was one of the most popular film stars. His films include Deliverance (1972), Smokey and the Bandit (1977), Citizen Ruth (1996), Boogie Nights (1997), The Hunter's Moon (1999), Waterproof (1999) and Tempted (2001). He had a longtime relationships with Dinah Shore and Sally Field, and was married to Loni Anderson (1988–93), with whom he adopted a son that they named Quintin after the character Burt had played on Gunsmoke (1962–65).
