After winning Emmy awards as a writer for The Carol Burnett Show in the 1970s, Levinson turned to screenplays, receiving an Oscar nomination for cowriting . . . And Justice for All (1979). His successes as a director include Good Morning, Vietnam (1987) and Rain Man (1988), for which he earned an Academy Award. He won an Oscar nomination for directing Bugsy (1991) and an Emmy for directing the pilot of the TV series Homicide (1993). Other production credits for the large screen include Donnie Brasco (1997), Wag the Dog (1997), Sphere (1998) and The Perfect Storm (2000)
