He came to Hollywood in 1949 and turned in superb performances in classics such as A Star Is Born (1954), Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest (1959), Stanley Kubrick's Lolita (1962), Georgy Girl (1966), The Verdict (1982), and The Shooting Party (1984).
