Birthplace: Conyers, Georgia
Academy- and Emmy Award-winning film and television actress. Often thought of as a Southern bundle of energy who can talk, talk, talk, she proved herself to be a truly versatile actress when she won an Oscar for her role as a repressed (and mute) nineteenth century woman in The Piano (1993). She won her Emmy for portraying the title role in Roe v. Wade (1989). Some of her other films include Raising Arizona (1987) with Nicolas Cage, Broadcast News (1987) with William Hurt, The Firm (1993) with Tom Cruise, Living Out Loud (1998) and O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000). The cartoon crowd knows her as the voice of Helen Parr/Elastigirl in The Incredibles (2004). She snagged a supporting actress Oscar nomination for her role in Thirteen (2003).
