Nicolae Ceausescu

Birthplace: Scornicesti, Romania

A member of the communist party from age 15, Ceausescu rose through the ranks to become President of the State Council in 1967 and general secretary of the Romanian Communist Party in 1969. A charismatic public figure, he became the first president of the Republic in 1974, but was deposed during the 1989 popular revolt. He and his wife, Elena, were shot following a military trial.
