A former model, she is noted especially for her work in Francois Truffaut's Day for Night (1973), about an actress recovering from a breakdown, and in John Huston's Under the Volcano (1984), opposite Albert Finney. Her other movies include The Deep (1977), The Greek Tycoon (1978), Who Is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe? (1978), Joan of Arc (1999), Jesus (2000) and Britannic (2000).
