Roy Lichtenstein painter, sculptor Born: 10/27/1923 Birthplace: New York City
A major figure in the U.S. pop art movement in the 1960s, Lichtenstein was famous for his paintings mimicking the typographic style and images of comic strips; they were imbued with his sophisticated sense of irony. After the 1960s he abandoned this technique and produced a wide variety of paintings, sculptures, murals, drawings, and prints. His works include Flatten . . . sandfleas (1962) and Preparedness (1968). Died: 9/29/1997
