Elliott Merrick (Elliott Tucker Merrick III)writer Born: 1906 Birthplace: Montclair, New Jersey In the 1940s, Merrick gained popularity as a writer of books set in Labrador and northern Vermont. The best-selling Northern Nurse (1942) focused on a story from the life of his first wife, Kate Austen, a nurse from Australia whom he met while teaching in Labrador (she died in 1994). Merrick's work was also published in magazines, and he was a science editor and publications officer for the U.S. Forest Service.
