Weaver attended Stanford University and the Yale School of Drama before making her film debut in Annie Hall (1977). Her first lead role in Alien (1979) skyrocketed her to fame and earned her the first of three Academy Award nominations. Other films of this versatile actress include three Alien sequels—Aliens (1986), Alien 3 (1992), and Alien Resurrection (1997)—the comedies Ghostbusters (1984), Dave (1993), Galaxy Quest (1999), and more serious fare, such as Gorillas in the Mist (1988), Death and the Maiden (1994), The Ice Storm (1997), and A Map of the World (1999).
