Dame Peggy Ashcroft

Although her impressive range allowed her to appear in plays from Sheridan to Shaw to Beckett to Pinter, Ashcroft was most loved for her portrayals of Shakespearean ingenues, roles she played well into her 40s. Among her many television and film appearances were The Thirty-Nine Steps (1935), The Jewel in the Crown (1982), and A Passage to India (1984) for which she won an Academy Award.
