A comic and dramatic actress, she won acclaim for her roles in Gillian Armstrong's My Brilliant Career (1979) and High Tide (1988) and in David Lean's A Passage to India (1984). Her other films include Impromptu (1991), Where Angels Fear to Tread (1991), The Ref (1994), Children of the Revolution (1996), and Woody Allen's Husbands and Wives (1992) and Deconstructing Harry (1997). She achieved an amazing likeness of Judy Garland in the television production of Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows (2001), an Emmy-winning performance. Continuing her portrayals of real-life people (she played Lillian Hellman in 1999's TV movie Dash and Lilly), she took on the role of Nancy Reagan in the controversial television movie The Reagans (2003).
