Robards made his mark on Broadway in the late 1950s, interpreting the works of Eugene O'Neill. His acclaimed performance in The Iceman Cometh (1956) was swiftly followed by his success in Long Day's Journey into Night (1957), which won a New York Drama Critics' Circle Award. Robards won Oscars for his roles in All the President's Men (1976) and Julia (1977), and he was nominated for another for Melvin and Howard (1980). He recently acted in A Thousand Acres (1997). Married for a time to actress Lauren Bacall, he is the father of actors Sam Robards and Jason Robards III.
