Best known as the rugged police chief in Jaws (1975), Scheider began acting in classical roles in repertory theater. His film career gained momentum in Klute (1971), and his 1972 role in The French Connection earned an Oscar nomination, as did his nuanced performance in All That Jazz (1979) seven years later. Scheider appeared in The Rainmaker (1997), Executive Target (1997), Silver Wolf (1998), and Texas 46 (2001).
