Fused silica optical waveguide—The inventors, Maurer, Keck, and Schultz. designed and produced the first optical fiber with light loss during transmission low enough for wide use in telecommunications. This paved the way for the commercialization of optical fiber and created a revolution in telecommunication. (1993)
