Arthur F. Burns economistBorn: 1904 Birthplace: Stanislau, Austria Having immigrated to the U.S. at age 10, he studied at Columbia and became a leading authority on business cycles. He eventually returned to Columbia to teach (1933–64) and served as an economic adviser to Presidents Eisenhower and Nixon, as chairman of the Federal Reserve (1970–78), and as U.S. ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany (1981–85).
