influential singer-songwriter known for his funky, political, and socially inspirational songs, such as “Superfly” and “People Get Ready” that put to chart-topping music themes of the civil-rights movement. He was paralyzed from the neck down in 1991, when lighting scaffolding fell on him during a concert. Died: Roswell, Ga., 12/26/1999
