Sybil Ludington

(Sybil Ogden)
American Revolution heroine
Born: 4/5/1761
Birthplace: Fredericksburg, N.Y. (now called Ludingtonville)

Ludington, the daughter of a New York militia colonel, is often called the “female Paul Revere.” On April 26, 1777, the Ludingtons learned that the British, under Gov. William Tryon, were attacking Danbury, Connecticut, where revolutionaries stored their weapons. Sybil, 16 at the time, rode 40 miles through the night on horseback to gather soldiers to protect the armaments. The 400 troops that assembled successfully thwarted the British.

Died: 2/26/1839
