Lois Mailou Jones American painterBorn: Nov. 3, 1905 Birthplace: Boston, Mass. Lois Mailou Jones was one of the premier African American artists of the 20th century. Her paintings incorporate African, Caribbean, and African-American influences and themes. They are featured in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Museum of American Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the National Portrait Gallery, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the National Palace in Haiti. In addition to her career as a painter, Jones was a professor of art at Howard University, teaching there from 1930 to 1977..
