Why do we throw up?

Updated February 21, 2017 | Factmonster Staff

We throw up when our stomach is irritated or overfilled. Some people throw up because their stomachs don’t pass food easily and food flows backwards into the esophagus. But most people throw up because of an irritated stomach caused by—yes, you guessed it—viruses or bacteria. Those little buggers cause so many problems! When you have an irritated stomach, be easy on it and drink light liquids. After some rest, the stomach will recover and go back to work for you. It is not normal to throw up unless you’re a baby.
