Irish actress Jessie Buckley was nominated for an Oscar for her role as a desperate young mother in The Lost Daughter. Since her big breakthrough as the singing star of the independent film Wild Rose (2018), Buckley has been busy in feature films as well as television, including the Charlie Kaufman film I’m Thinking of Ending Things (2019, opposite Jesse Plemons) as well as the television series Chernobyl (2019) and Fargo (2020, starring Chris Rock). Buckley set off for London from Ireland at the age of 17 for a career in acting. In the next two years, she had come in second in a TV talent show, I’d Do Anything, had landed jobs on stage and was occasionally singing in clubs. She then decided to study acting. After a three-year program at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, Buckley graduated in 2013. In 2016 she appeared in the BBC series War and Peace, then in the critically-acclaimed film Beast (2017); in Wild Rose she played the lead role and sang the songs on the soundtrack. In The Lost Daughter, the 2021 film by Maggie Gyllenhaal, Buckley portrays the younger version of Olivia Colman’s character. Buckley was nominated for an Oscar as a supporting player, and Colman was nominated for an Oscar as the lead.
