A Bold New Leader in Japan

New Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, 59, vows to bring a new style to Japanese politics - and he’s not just referring to his snazzy permed hairdo! Last week the eccentric Koizumi, who used to be Health Minister, won a close contest for control of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. He is the country’s 12th Prime Minister since 1989.

"I will appoint the right person for the right job," Koizumi said upon taking office. He then appointed a record five women to his 17-member Cabinet. Among them was Makiko Tanaka, who becomes Japan’s first female Foreign Minister.

Koizumi replaces the unpopular Yoshiro Mori. Voters hope that Koizumi will keep his promises, especially his pledges to improve Japan’s economy and turn the postal system into a private business. If he succeeds, some critics may even overlook his love for heavy-metal bands!
