Missing Monkey

The animal kingdom has lost a member. Scientists said last week that the West African monkey called Miss Waldron's red colobus is extinct. Many people have searched for the big, noisy monkey. But no one has spotted or heard one in 20 years.

Miss Waldron's red colobus once lived in the jungles of Ghana and Ivory Coast. It is the first monkey to disappear from the earth in hundreds of years. Experts say hunters killed off the monkeys.

Scientists hope this loss will make people want to protect the world's endangered animals. "Africa may seem like a world away," says Andrew Plumptre of the New York City-based Wildlife Conservation Society, which supported recent efforts to search for the monkey. "But it's our world, and we need to protect it."
