The 1997 World Series made history even before the first game was played. That's because the Florida Marlins became the newest team ever to reach the series.

How did the five-year-old team make it to baseball's ultimate face-off? Some say big bucks bought them the best players and helped them win the National League championship. They have one of the highest-paid teams in their league.

But ace Marlins pitcher Kevin Brown says you can't buy success. "The money is not what won," he said. "The heart, determination and relentless pursuit of our goal were what won for us."

Not that the Cleveland Indians are lacking in heart and determination--or money. But like the Marlins, they overcame injuries and tough competition to win their league pennant.

Cleveland's fans go to the zaniest lengths to show their loyalty. They sport a fashion only Urkel could love: red knee-high socks like those of first baseman Jim Thome.

Marlins fans are new to Series mania, but they're learning fast. "This is history," said Esteban Diaz after buying three Marlins World Series T shirts. "I want a piece of it."
