A Pop Artist's Colorful Life

A giant painting showing Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. A comic-strip scene painted on a canvas as tall as a house. Is this really art? Painter Roy Lichtenstein convinced the world that it is. Last week he died in New York City at age 73.

Lichtenstein's work is called Pop Art. Pop artists paint popular, ordinary subjects, such as brand-name products or advertisements. Lichtenstein's paintings have sold for millions of dollars. In 1995 Lichtenstein won the National Medal of Arts Award for his contributions to American art.
