Honoring the life of Cesar Chavez

by Liz Olson

Cesar Chavez Day celebrates the birthday of Latino labor leader Cesar Chavez. California established the state holiday to promote community service. Cesar Chavez Day is celebrated in California on March 31, or the following Monday or preceding Friday of that date.

Cesar Chavez Day passed the California Senate and Assembly on August 10, 2000, becoming a law that requires all public schools in California to close for the holiday. In addition, the State Board of Education requires schools to honor Cesar Chavez with curriculum related to the history of the farm labor movement in the United States, and specifically Cesar Chavez's role in it.
