The Kaw River flood peaked on this date in 1951. Torrential rains in eastern Kansas during June and early July caused the Kansas River (aka the Kaw River) to overflow its banks. Total damage from the flood was estimated at $870 million, and flooding in the Midwest that summer claimed 41 lives and left 200,000 people homeless.
