Weather Almanac: March 25

March 25

Today's Weather Fact...

On this date in 1948, the first ever successful tornado warning was issued. It was for Tinker Air Force Base outside of Oklahoma City. Air Force Captain Robert C. Miller and Major Ernest J. Fawbush were able to recognize that the weather conditions in the area had the potential for tornadoes and warned the base, allowing people to get to relative safety. Since that first warning issued over 50 years ago, weather forecasters have improved their ability to give tornado warnings and can now give about a 15-16 minute lead time on tornadoes, doubtlessly saving countless lives.
