On this date in 1927, tropical rains caused the great Vermont flood, the worst in the state's history. Up to 15 inches of rain caused $40 million in damages and killed 200 people, 84 in the town of Vernon. The state's capital, Montpelier, was drowned in eight to ten feet of water.
