On this date in 1998, Hurricane Georges was finally winding down following its deadly run through the Carribean and southern United States. An estimated 600 people were killed by the storm and damages exceeded $5 billion. The great majority of fatalities and damages occurred in the Carribean, mostly notably on the island of Hispaniola.
