On this date in 1898, a thunderstorm dropped giant hailstones on Kansas City, Missouri. Hundreds of south-facing windows were broken and several people were injured. Hailstones up to 9.5 inches in circumference were authenticated and one that was significantly larger was found but was exposed as a fraud when it was discovered that a prankster threw a big chunk of ice out their window.
