On this date in 1999, three men were killed in an avalanche in the central Colorado Rockies. The young men, who were taken to the area by snowmobile, were there to ski and snowboard when the half-mile slide buried them. A fourth man, on the edge of the slide, managed to escape with his life. Officials speculated that the snowmobile may have triggered the avalanche. Two others died in separate avalanches in Utah and California on the same day.
