On this date in 1915, Great Bend, Kansas, was torn by a surprise tornado that travelled over 35 miles, killed eleven people, and caused $1 million in damages. Approximately 160 homes were destroyed. In addition, hundreds of flying fowl were killed and then fell from the sky along the tornado's track.
