Why do some people have freckles?

Freckles are small “birthmarks”. They are made of collections of melanocytes, or skin cells, that produce pigment. Most people inherit a tendency to have freckles from their parents. Like many other “birthmarks,” freckles are not usually present at birth but develop in our skin over years.
