Paik, Nam June

Paik, Nam June näm jo͞on pīk [key], 1932–2006, Korean-American artist, widely considered the founder of video art, b. Seoul, studied art and music at Tokyo Univ. and in Germany. A performance and conceptual artist, Paik worked beginning in the 1960s mainly with video, integrating visual images with music. A characteristic work, Fin de Siecle II (1989–90; Whitney Mus., New York City), incorporates hundreds of television monitors, confronting the viewer with multiple images and sounds. His wife, Shigeko Kubota, 1937–2015, was also a pioneering video artist.
