Gwilt, Joseph

Gwilt, Joseph gwĭlt [key], 1784–1863, British architect, archaeologist, and writer, known chiefly for his Encyclopaedia of Architecture, Historical, Theoretical, and Practical (8 vol., 1842). Among his other books are Sciography or, Examples of Shades and Shadows, with Rules for Their Projection (1822) an edition of Sir William Chambers 's Treatise on the Decorative Part of Civil Architecture, with annotations (1825) a translation of Vitruvius (1826) and Elements of Architectural Criticism (1837).
