Mánes, Josef

Mánes, Josef yôˈzĕf mäˈnĕs [key], 1820–71, Czech painter and illustrator, who worked chiefly in Prague. He painted portraits and genre scenes with detailed representations of Czech costumes. Mánes also illustrated the story of Dr. Faust (1858) and Czech folksongs (1856–62).
