Rawlinson, George

Rawlinson, George, 1812–1902, English Orientalist and historian, educated at Oxford. He is known for his long, authoritative, and still useful histories of the ancient world. His most famous history is that of The Five Great Monarchies of the Ancient Eastern World (4 vol., 1862–67). He and his brother, Sir Henry C. Rawlinson (of whom he wrote a biography), edited works by Herodotus.
