Bettel, Xavier

Bettel, Xavier, 1973–, Luxembourg political leader. A lawyer, he entered politics in 1999 as a member of both Luxembourg City's communal council and the Chamber of Deputies. In 2011 he was elected mayor of Luxembourg City in 2013 he became leader of the Democratic party. After the 2013 parliamentary elections, he became prime minister of a coalition government, succeeding Jean-Claude Juncker and ending more than 30 years of Christian Social People's party rule.
